Advanced Periodontitis
Advanced periodontal disease marks the last stage of this disease process. As explained by our San Marcos dentist, the destruction of the bone around the teeth is so severe that tooth loss is inevitable. At this stage of the disease is where most people notice the pain. Unfortunately, at times the dissease has caused so much damage to the tooth and surrounding structures that treatment choices become limited.

At this stage, a full 80% of the bone support has been destroyed. The gums are a harbor of bacteria in the mouth, posing a great health risk to the patient and those around. Below are pictorial renditions of advanced periodontal disease and how it compares with a healthy tooth. The first image is the healthy tooth. Second image is advanced periodontal disease attacking the gums. The third picture shows how advanced periodontitis would look compared to healthy gums on the same tooth.

The treatment at this stage is aimed at saving the teeth that are still salvageable, along with removal of hopeless teeth. Periodontal surgery is a strong possibility.
