Dentures: Solution to Complete Tooth Loss
Dentures are probably one of the oldest ways to replace lost teeth. And they are also very cost effective. In the event that somesone loses all of their teeth, dentures can replace the missing teeth and allow the person to function better in their daily lives. Not only are dentures useful in chewing, a well designed set of dentures can make the face look less aged. Our San Marcos dentist can help you decide if denture therapy is the right choice for you.
Denture Care and Maintanance
Dentures need to be care for, cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. They will need to be relined several times over their lifespan. Dentures may also require some repair from time to time such as a broken tooth or a cracked base. Our San Marcos dentist can help you decide if a denture repair or reline is necessary.
Immediate or Transitional Dentures
When it is decided to remove the teeth, some planning can make the day of the surgery go smoothly. A denture can be fabricated ahead of time. This is called a "transitional" denture as a new denture needs to be made about 1 year after surgery. This is due to the extensive bone remodelling that occurs within the first year after tooth loss.. Below is a patient where all the upper teeth and some of the lower teeth were severely compromised and non-salvagable. An upper transitional denture was fabricated before the surgery was performed. On the day of the surgery the upper denture was placed after the teeth were removed. The photos are taken at one month apart.
