Oral cancer affects some 35,000 Americans yearly, according to the American Cancer Society. Of these 35K cases, 7500 do not survive past the first year. And of the remaining 27,500 cases, only 50% make it longer than 5 years. There is not doubt that this is a deadly disease.
Early Detection: For Best Chances
The earlier in the disease cycle oral cancer is detected, the better the treatment outcome. Our San Marcos dentist performs oral cancer screenings for all of our patients. Development of technology allows us to more accurately detect oral cancer lesions.
Vizilite Plus allows us to detect lesions we may miss under normal lighting. X-rays help us detect cavities that we cannot see directly. Vizilite Plus does the same for oral cancer.
Oral Cancer: Risk Factors
Risk factors for oral cancer include more than smoking cigarettes or other forms of tobacco use. But here are some additional risk factors that you may not be aware of:
- Alcohol abuse
- HPV (Human Papilooma Virus
- Adults 40 years and older
- History of other forms of cancer
- Exposure to 2nd hand smoke
However, nearly 25% of oral cancer victims have none of these risk factors. So everyone should be screened thoroughly with Vizilite Plus to improve chances for oral cancer detection.
